Reading to learn is four things:
- It is a methodology and set of strategies for teaching reading and writing, across school and further education.
- It is a professional learning program for teachers, in the knowledge about language and pedagogy that underpins the methodology.
- It is an expanding research project in pedagogic theory and practice.
- And it is an international network of teachers and teacher educators who have been trained and train in the professional learning program.
Reading to Learn began as a research project with teachers of Indigenous Australian students in primary and secondary school in the late 1990s. These students were years behind their non-Indigenous peers in literacy, but within the first year of the project, their teachers had most of them reading at or close to age appropriate levels. Since then, the R2L professional learning program has worked with many thousands of teachers in all sectors of education. Through this work, R2L has developed into a comprehensive methodology for embedding the teaching of reading and writing into curriculum learning at all school levels.
Today there are Reading to Learn networks and professional learning programs in South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Sweden, Finland, UK, Spain, Portugal, USA, Chile, Hong Kong, and in Australia in Queensland, Victoria, NSW and South Australia.

R2L training has been run in NSW for over 10 years, including major training programs for DEC Western Region and Western Metropolitan Region. Currently training programs are running in south western Sydney schools.

The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) hosts two teacher training resources for R2L strategies on its website. These include lesson demonstrations, lesson plans, and brochures for parents and teachers.
R2L training has been run successfully in Victoria for over 10 years, by Catholic Education Melbourne, and DET Victoria.

Reading to Learn has been used in schools in East Africa for more than 5 years. The Education for Marginalised Children in Kenya (EMACK) in partnership with USAID has just completed a 2 year programme in Coast Province, North East Province and Nairobi.
